P R I O R I T I E S
"As a Statewide Organizer, I’ve learned that while communities' needs vary, they all deserve leadership that prioritizes their concerns. Now more than ever, it is essential to have leaders who will fight with a sense of urgency for policies that protect our most vulnerable populations." - Taylor
ECONOMIC STABILITY + GROWTH
As your State Representative, I will work every single day to strengthen our economy and provide more pathways to employment. I will fight to increase the minimum wage to a living wage and:
Invest in Skilled Trades Training
Repeal the Senior Pension Tax
Provide incentives for businesses that hire Veterans and Detroiters
Mandate Paid Maternity Leave
CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM
The United States has more people incarcerated than any other country. We know that Mass Incarceration is a public health crisis and disproportionately impacts poor people and people of color; and it does not make us safer.
When elected, I will commit to fighting for restorative justice and reforming the Criminal Justice System by:
Decriminalizing drug use and possession
Restoring both Earned Time Credit & Good Time Credit for Probationers, Prisoners, and Parolees
Supporting programs that focus on Rehabilitation
Expanding Expungement Guidelines
Creating safeguards for Incarcerated Pregnant Women
Food, water, and shelter are basic human needs that everyone should be entitled to. Having access to affordable housing is fundamental for good mental and physical health. Housing insecurities negatively impact communities. I have stood alongside Detroit City Council President Pro-Tem Mary Sheffield in her fight for quality, affordable housing in the city of Detroit and I will take that fight to Lansing.
It is not enough to just set aside a percentage of units in apartment buildings for qualifying low-income residents. We must increase the income eligibility cap for affordable housing to ensure that low-income families have access to nice places to live.
LOWER AUTO INSURANCE RATES AND ENDING REDLINING
Michigan has the highest auto insurance rates in the country and the city of Detroit is home to the absolute highest rates. At my address, my car insurance for a 2014 Dodge Dart is $790.00. If I moved just one block over to Grosse Pointe, my insurance would drastically drop to under $300.00. We must push back on insurance companies to end red-lining and eliminate non-driving factors for rate calculation.
